Inheritance dani shapiro reviews5/30/2023 While memoir is an inherently self-indulgent genre, I find Shapiro's unwillingness to examine her privilege very troubling. Shapiro mentions her role as writer again and again as well as her desire to make sense of her life. I thought this would be an interesting book similar to Carolyn Abraham’s The Juggler’s Children. It is a book about the extraordinary moment we live in-a moment in which science and technology have outpaced not only medical ethics but also the capacities of the human heart to contend with the consequences of what we discover. It is the story of a woman’s urgent quest to unlock the story of her own identity, a story that has been scrupulously hidden from her for more than fifty years, years she had spent writing brilliantly, and compulsively, on themes of identity and family history. Inheritance is a book about secrets-secrets within families, kept out of shame or self-protectiveness secrets we keep from one another in the name of love. She woke up one morning and her entire history-the life she had lived-crumbled beneath her. The author of Hourglass now gives us a new memoir about identity, paternity, and family secrets-a real-time In the spring of 2016, through a genealogy website to which she had whimsically submitted her DNA for analysis, Dani Shapiro received the stunning news that her father was not her biological father.

The strange library book5/30/2023 (The EV “high end” keeps getting higher.)The EV story, analysts point out, remains one of net carbon impact. An editorial in the Los Angeles Times decries a wave of bigger – and bigger-battery – EVs. Those are pricier than EVs like the little Bolt hatchback, which General Motors discontinued in favor of pickups. They’re more resource-intensive, too. The demand side – that is, consumer preferences – plays an important role, too. There are full-size EV pickups that can power homes, and some drivers do need big vehicles. For 2022, the firms involved in the mining and manufacturing for those accounted for 27% of Tesla’s total emissions, reports Quartz. But the supply side isn’t the only thing to consider as we think about EVs and making the future work. And such “Scope 3” emissions – including those of suppliers – represented the deepest part of the product line’s carbon footprint.Batteries are a big factor. But this time, in Tesla’s report, it was part of the tally. What should we make of a recent report from carmaker Tesla reminding us that, even though its cars have no tailpipes, there are significant carbon emissions associated with getting them built and on the road? It’s worth thinking about, though there’s a lot more at play when it comes to electric vehicles and CO2 emissions. The vast network needed to supply raw materials and component parts for EVs makes for difficult accounting.

The enchanted barn book5/30/2023 The protagonist is the eldest child and "man of the family" - a young stenographer named Shirley. A similar fixer-upper theme is found in April Gold, another charming Christian classic, also written by GLH. A destitute family makes a home in an old stone barn, which unconventional and desperate act wins the interest of their debonaire millionaire landlord. The Enchanted Barn is like a fairy tale, where love, hard work, courage, and faith outfox the forces of despair. Īudible also has a version performed beautifully by narrator Ann Hancock, who also narrated Re-Creations, another book about fixing up a home. Download the audiofile, or click the play arrows, at Librivox. She has narrated several complete books by Grace Livingston Hill. Published more than a century ago, this old Christian romance is FREE in a good audio version narrated by Gail Mattern.

A man possessed by this system will see in everything that I have written only the expression of “suppressed libido”, which seeks and finds release in this manner. What I am saying concerning mysticism, gnosis, magic and philosophy would be considered by him only as a ruse on the part of the bourgeois class, with the aim of “screening with a mystical and idealistic haze” the reality of the exploitation of the proletariat by the bourgeoisie…although I have not inherited anything from my parents and I have not experienced a single day without having to earn my living by means of work recognised as “legitimate” by Marxists!Īnother contemporary example of possession by a system is Freudianism. Thus, a Marxist of today is incapable of seeing anything else in the history of mankind other than the “class struggle”. “A person who has had the misfortune to fall victim to the spell of a philosophical system (and the spells of sorcerers are mere trifles in comparison to the disastrous effect of the spell of a philosophical system!) can no longer see the world, or people, or historic events, as they are he sees everything only through the distorting prism of the system by which he is possessed.

All i need by susane colasanti5/29/2023 Unfortunately, Seth and Skye never end up exchanging contact information despite really hitting it off. All I Need is about how the two feel such a deep connection, pine for each other, and then what happens when they eventually meet back up again. While attending one of the last beach parties of the summer, she meets a new boy, Seth. She wants to have one of those earth shattering romances that you see in movies. YES! That is the term, this is definitely a beach read and perfect for the season. Actually it’s totally your quintessential summer fling sort of a read. There are certain books that have this non-committal feel, like you don’t have to become heavily invested in the books because they are not all that deep and won’t affect you to the core, BUT these are the books you read to clear your palate for the next heavy hitter. All I Need by Susane Colasanti is a perfectly pleasant, perfectly decent book but it is not exactly one that will stick with me forever. Sometimes you just need a sweet, light romantic young adult contemporary book in between heavier tomes.

The city we became nk jemisin5/29/2023 There’s Padmini (Queens), the mathematician from Chennai who is in NYC on a student visa. There’s Bronca (Bronx), the Lenape arts centre administrator, who’s the only one of the five that was ‘reborn’ knowing the group’s history and purpose. There’s Brooklyn, the badass Black city council member who used to be a rapper and who lives in a brownstone with her dad and daughter. The characters felt real, but I think they will also resonate much more strongly for those with an emotional connection to NYC.įirst, there’s Manny (Manhattan), the brash and charming ethnically ambiguous newcomer who finds power in a cab ride and in dollar bills. It made me wish I grew up in New York City, or even that I just lived there now. I find her books brilliant - they’re multilayered and reveal more with each re-reading. They must band together and find the living embodiment of New York as a single, wholly encompassing city, so that they can defeat the Woman in White, an other-dimensional being determined to stop New York City from being ‘born.’ In it, five New Yorkers are ‘reborn’ into the living embodiments of the five NYC boroughs. The City We Became is a full-out, unapologetic, in-your-face homage to New York City. |
